2010 Season

OMBC 2010Old Man Brunner Country

June 4th – June 27th, 2010

by Leo Dangel

The Jon Hassler Theater in Plainview MN will open its 2010 season in June with a remount of
Old Man Brunner Country, a richly comic revue of life in 1960s rural Midwest, adapted from books
by Minnesota writer, Leo Dangel.

Writer Norbert Blei says Old Man Brunner Country “is that trip to the farm we never forgot.” Published in
1987, Dangel places it “Near the end of the Millenium” — in a world devoid of pesticides, cell phones, i-pods
and computerized tractors.  Old Man Brunner Country has the flavor of a family photo album, snapshots that charm, amuse, and disarm.  Driven by narrative,
the comedy contains undercurrents of feeling, grief and tenderness to create an enactment of universal human mysteries, all captured in understated language.
Blei calls Dangel’s work, “Huck on the plains.”

In 1998, Director Sally Childs conceived of this richly comic revue for Lyric Theater of Minneapolis.  She collaborated with Ron Duffy, who directed
and designed the first production, which premiered at a Writers’ Conference at Southwest Minnesota University in Marshall where Dangel taught and then
opened at the Hennepin Center for the Arts in Minneapolis.  The show traveled to several venues, including Plainview, where it was performed in the newly purchased implement dealership building at 412 W. Broadway before its conversion to the Rural America Arts Center.  The actors played on a small platform
with improvised lighting, and seating was made from straw bales mounted on farm wagons brought in through the huge garage door.  Where once there
were tractors, now there were actors.

With characters such as Arlo, Benny, Milo, Berniece, Pa and Old Man Brunner, the show was remounted as part of the 2001 Jon Hassler Theater season.
Since then Dangel has published another book, The Crow on the Golden Arches.”  According to Director Sally Childs, “Dangel uses dialogue to pull us in and
then surprises us with delightful punch lines.”  Rohan Preston agreed in his 1998 review for the Star Tribune, “Some of the work reveals Dangel’s ribald humor.
Other pieces sport the wiseacre bravura of a cowboy poet.”

Kristen Mathisen and Jack Carter will recreate their roles as “Her”and “Minstrel.”  New to the cast are Bill Studer as “Old Man Brunner,”
David Roberts as “Him” and Josh Larson as “Young Man.”  Dale Pfeilsticker will stage manage.  Director Sally Childs will incorporate new work
by Dangel and plans to explore more fully the liberties bestowed by memory and fantasy in this new production.  Paul Skattum’s set and Ben Hain’s
lighting will underscore these facets.

A Don't Hug Me County Fair

September 16th – October 17th, 2010

by Phil Olson

A Don't Hug Me County Fair is the hilarious summer sequel to the smash hit musicals Don't Hug Me and A Don't Hug Me Christmas Carol.
It's a stand alone musical that doesn't require you to see the others in order to fully enjoy it.

It’s county fair time in Bunyan Bay, Minnesota, the biggest thing that’s happened since the winter carnival snowplow parade. This year the Bunyan
County Fair means two things to Gunner and Clara Johnson, owners of a little bar called The Bunyan; The big County Fair Fishing Contest and The Miss
Walleye Queen Competition. Bernice, the pretty waitress, sees this as her big chance to win Miss Walleye Queen, to be discovered, and more important,
to have her face carved in butter at the Minnesota State Fair. The trouble begins when Gunner’s wife, Clara, decides she also wants to win Miss Walleye
Queen, and when Gunner’s estranged twin sister, Trigger, shows up to try to win the beauty pageant, things get ugly.

Featuring 18 original songs including:

Our Butter Face Queen
Pontoon Ladies
I'm Just a Pretty Forest Ranger
My Campfire is Burnin' For You
If I Could Win Miss Walleye Queen
I'm a Bunyan Woman

A Don't Hug Me County fair is the third musical comedy installment in the Don't Hug Me series. The original Don’t Hug Me first opened in Los Angeles
at The Whitefire Theatre in November 2003 to rave reviews and sold-out houses. Originally slated for a six week run, Don't Hug Me was extended
by popular demand and was the longest running musical comedy in Los Angeles when it closed after six smash hit months. Don’t Hug Me then moved to
Minneapolis where it was slated for an eight week run. It ended up running for 9 smash hit months in Minneapolis.

Don’t Hug Me won 4 Artistic Director Achievement Awards in Los Angeles including Best Original Musical and Best Author Original Play. Theatres across
the country are breaking box office records with Don’t Hug Me. Don't Hug Me is available for licensing thru Samuel French Publishers and is playing in cities
all across the U.S. and Canada.

Theatres did so well with Don’t Hug Me that the sequel was written, A Don't Hug Me Christmas Carol, a hilarious spoof of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas
Carol." Five theatres booked A Don’t Hug Me Christmas Carol before it was even written. A Don’t Hug Me Christmas Carol ran for 16 weeks in Los Angeles,
one of the longest running Christmas shows in the country. A Don’t Hug Me Christmas Carol was chosen Best Musical of the Year in Los Angeles by ReviewPlays.com and has broken box office records across the country. A Don’t Hug Me Christmas Carol is also published by Samuel French.

The success of the first two Don't Hug Me musicals prompted Samuel French to request a summer sequel to the series and A Don’t Hug Me County Fair
was written. A Don't Hug Me County Fair had its World Premiere in Los Angeles in February, 2009, and was booked to play in 7 other cities before it was
written. The smash hit musical was extended several times in Los Angeles winning both critical and commercial acclaim. A Don't Hug Me County Fair was
nominated for 8 Artistic Director Achievement Awards in Los Angeles, winning three awards including Best Author Original Play, Best Choreographer,
and Best Lighting. A Don't Hug Me County Fair is currently available for licensing thru Samuel French.

To date, the three Don't Hug Me musicals have played in over 100 cities around the U.S. and Canada.
